Checking the changes over time and the impacts of COVID-19 on cockle (Cerastoderma edule) small-scale fisheries in Ria de Aveiro coastal lagoon, Portugal

Historical information on cockle landings and studies local knowledge fishing, zoology, ecology in the Ria de Aveiro remain incomplete. Due to COVID-19 pandemic current conditions of artisanal fisheries Europe, understanding dynamics this activity has become even more necessary. Therefore, case study sought investigate changes that have taken place recent fishing decades verify degree contentment these fishers with rules for during period. LEK showed a downward trend stock time scale around 60 years. Members villages not experienced shifting baseline syndrome. This traditional fishery proved susceptible intense effort, increased fishers, decreased commercial-sized adult individuals, incidence biotoxins diseases cockle. Fishers were content measures circumstances imposed between 2020 2021. The main points related discontent about income government financial support fishers. Synergistic initiatives covering all those involved bioresource are essential sustainability resource great socio-ecological importance Iberian Peninsula. Health efforts governance also recommended optimal functioning application policies coming from participatory can be way greater acceptance by better management bivalve lagoon.
